What's In A Name?

Today, I'm linking up with Miranda of Young And In Progress for What's In A Name?

My name, as of now, is Courtney Anne Theresa Dyson. Soon (in about 2 years), I will take my fiance's last name, which is Batista.

Anyway, I was supposed to be name Allison, but it didn't go with our last name. Honestly, I would have preferred Allison. It's much more girly than Courtney. I hate my name, it's too manly. Anyway, my mom saw my name in a clothing store when she was pregnant with me. The brand was Courtney & Co., my mom loved the name, and that's how I got it.

Courtney is actually a man's name in Europe, but a female's name here in the US. There are a few meanings to it from various sources. From the English, it means court attendant (how original). From the French, it means from the court (how original again) or short nose and it's also a French surname Courtenay. And finally, from the Anglo Saxon, it means dweller by the dark sea.

According, to a baby name site, "people with this name have a deep inner desire for travel and adventure, and want to set their own pace in life without being governed by tradition". That's definitely true about me. I love traveling, adventures, and I love going at my own pace.

And, "people with this name tend to be orderly and dedicated to building their lives on a solid foundation of order and service. They value truth, justice, and discipline, and may be quick-tempered with those who do not. Their practical nature makes them good at managing and saving money, and at building things in the material world. Because of their focus on order and practicality, they may seem overly cautious and conservative at times". Uh, no, definitely not true, except for the fact that I am cautious and conservative at times.

Over the years, I've been called Court (obviously), Courtney-lourtney (it rhymes), and Courtney Belle (which means, Courtney Beautiful in Italian; my grandfather used to call me that).

In school, I've been called, by my teachers, Cassandra, Christine, and Chelsea. How do you get those names from Courtney?

My Middle Name

My middle name, Anne, has been passed down to me. My grandmother had that middle name, my mother does, and now I do. And if I ever have daughter, the tradition is stopping with me. Again, there a few meanings to Anne. From the Hebrew and English, it means favor or grace, prayer, and God has favored me. And from the French, it's a French spelling of English Ann, introduced to Britain in the 13th century.

"People with this name have a deep inner desire for a stable, loving family or community, and a need to work with others and to be appreciated". I do love stability and family and I need to be appreciated.

"People with this name are excellent at analyzing, understanding, and learning. They tend to be mystics, philosophers, scholars, and teachers. Because they live so much in the mind, they tend to be quiet and introspective, and are usually introverts. When presented with issues, they will see the larger picture. Their solitary thoughtfulness and analysis of people and world events may make them seem aloof, and sometimes even melancholy". This is 100% me. I'm very quiet, introspective, an introvert, aloof, and melancholy. Ironically, these are the same traits for my confirmation name Theresa.

My Confirmation Name

My confirmation name is Theresa. I chose to be named after my great grandmother, who died when I was 6. I only knew her for a few years of my life, but I loved her and she holds a special place in my heart. Theresa comes from the Greek, meaning reaper (how lovely).

"People with this name have a deep inner desire to inspire others in a higher cause, and to share their own strongly held views on spiritual matters". Kind of true; I am spiritual and I want to inspire others.

My Last Name

Dyson is of Anglo Saxon origin and came from the medieval name Dennis, so it means Dennis' son. Dyson is a metronymic surname, which means it comes from the first name of the mother. This was common for second born sons to take the name of their mother as a surname in the Middle Ages.

I never minded my last name. It was easy spell, no one mispronounced it, and I was always in the beginning of the alphabet in school or something.

My Soon To Be Last Name

Batista originates from Spain and Portugal which means to dip and batiste, which is a fine cloth made from wool, cotton, or polyester. Other than that, there's no other information of Batista.

xx Courtney
